Onam is the famous festival celebrated Kerala as well as all over India. It is a harvest festival in which rice is harvested.

It is celebrated by remembering the golden ruled of king Mahabali, A king who ruled over Kerala.
In the ancient history of treta (second) yug there was a king mahabali in the southern part of India. He belonged to the asura (demon) dynasty and became the "Mahabali chakravathy" king of king. To test the king lord Vishnu came to earth.
The lord Vishnu's 5th incarnation as a dwarf (Vamana). Vamana visited the court of bali and begged of him as much land he could step over in 3 paces.
The king made fun because just 3 pace of the dwarf would be too less. Then vamana came into a gigantic form.
With the 1st step he covered the whole earth, with the 2nd step the mid world between earth and heaven.
As there was nowhere left to go, the king suggested Vamana to put his foot on his head and he also recognized that he was not a ordinary dwarf it was lord Vishnu.
